Moving coil (MC)

A moving coil, or MC, cartridge works in reverse of a moving magnet design, attaching tiny coils to the cantilever that move within a fixed magnetic field as the stylus tracks the groove. This construction typically produces a much lower output signal than a moving magnet cartridge of similar quality.

Because the output is so low, a moving coil cartridge needs a phono preamp or phono stage with a compatible MC input, or built-in step-up gain, to bring the signal up to a usable level without excess noise. Plugging one into a standard MM-only phono input generally results in a very quiet, thin sounding signal rather than proper playback. Many moving coil cartridges also have a fixed, non-replaceable stylus, meaning the whole cartridge is usually sent in for retipping or replaced once worn.

Before buying a moving coil cartridge, confirm your phono preamp or receiver actually supports MC input, since this is the single most common compatibility mistake made when upgrading. Budget for the cost of the whole unit rather than just a stylus when it eventually wears, since replacement is less flexible than with moving magnet designs. Many listeners are well served staying with a quality moving magnet cartridge unless their system is specifically built to take advantage of moving coil.
