Swapping a platter mat changes two things at once, and the second one is the trap. The intended change is damping: a cork and rubber composite absorbs the ringing a bare metal or glass platter adds and grips the record so it is coupled rather than floating, which is why cork-rubber has become the default upgrade over stock felt. The unintended change is geometry, because mat thickness sets record height. Composite mats run around 3 mm, which is close to an eighth of an inch, and if you are replacing a thicker rubber mat or a compressed felt you have moved the record surface up or down by a millimeter or two and tilted the cartridge in the process. That is a vertical tracking angle change you have to correct at the arm pillar, and skipping it undoes most of what the mat gained. Composition sets the character: more cork gives a drier, tighter presentation and less static, while more rubber damps harder and grips more but can sound closed in. Pure rubber holds dust and pure cork alone can be slippery, which is why the blends dominate. Anti-static is a real benefit here rather than marketing, since neither material generates charge the way felt does, so records attract less dust between plays. A recessed center relief matters if you play records with thick or raised labels, because without it the label lifts the disc off the mat and you lose the contact you paid for.
