How to Reduce Inner Groove Distortion on Vinyl

Many listeners notice that records sound clean at the start of a side but become harsh, sibilant or fuzzy in the last tracks. This is inner groove distortion. Some of it is built into how records are cut, because grooves near the centre move past the stylus more slowly and pack information more tightly. Setup, stylus condition and cartridge choice can make it far less noticeable.
Why inner grooves are harder to play
A record spins at a constant speed, so the outer grooves travel much further per revolution than inner grooves. Near the label, the same audio is compressed into a shorter length of groove, which makes accurate tracking more difficult.
Pivoted tonearms also have tracking angle error that changes across the record. Loud, high-frequency sounds like vocals, cymbals and brass are especially likely to distort near the end of a side.
Check cartridge alignment
Proper cartridge alignment minimises tracking angle error at key points across the record. Use a cartridge alignment protractor to set overhang and angle according to your tonearm's recommended geometry.
A cartridge slightly out of alignment often sounds fine on outer tracks but distorts inner ones. Tighten mounting screws after aligning, and recheck alignment after changing cartridges or headshells.
Set tracking force and anti-skate
Tracking force that is too light causes the stylus to mistrack and distort, particularly on inner grooves. Set tracking force within the cartridge manufacturer's recommended range, often toward the middle or upper portion of that range.
Anti-skate counters the force pulling the tonearm toward the centre of the record. Incorrect anti-skate can cause one channel to distort more than the other.
Inspect the stylus and records
Worn styli lose their precise shape and struggle to trace inner grooves. If distortion has gradually worsened over time, the stylus may need replacing.
Dirty records also contribute to distortion. Clean records and the stylus regularly, and note that worn used records may have permanent groove damage that no setup change will fix.
Consider stylus shape
Conical styli are durable and forgiving, but their round shape has more difficulty tracing fine inner groove details. Elliptical, microline and Shibata styli have narrower contact edges that can trace tight grooves more accurately.
Advanced stylus shapes require more careful alignment to perform well. Upgrading to a better elliptical stylus or cartridge is often an effective improvement for inner groove distortion.
